Daily Bible Reading – 2.19.2021:
Mark 9:38-41 (NIV) – “Teacher,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we told him to stop, because he was not one of us.”
“Do not stop him,” Jesus said. “For no one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me, for whoever is not against us is for us. Truly I tell you, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to the Messiah will certainly not lose their reward.
Pastor Doug’s Comments:
The disciples’ proud mindset continued. They thought as the inner circle they could only be used by God to set people free. They thought they had position and privilege that others did not or should not have. They had the mindset of the current humorous State Farm Insurance commercials where celebrities and non-celebrities alike believe they are uniquely getting special discounts that no one else is getting.
As the commercials assert that everyone gets the discount, Jesus quickly corrected them and said that anyone performing a miracle in his name is one of them. They cannot drive out Satan one moment and then speak evil of Jesus in the next moment. Since they are doing so in Jesus’ name, they have already welcomed Jesus into their lives. Jesus’ name is not a magical incantation for anyone to use as they wish but is a majestic incarnation of God’s power for those who truly believe.
Jesus gave another illustration about anyone giving a drink in Jesus’ name to his own disciples who were in need. These are the very ones who represent the kingdom of God well.
Jesus’ repetition of using “in my name” culminates in Jesus declaring himself “Messiah” for the first time. Confessing Jesus as Messiah would become the distinctive mark of Jesus’ disciples and would show itself in selfless acts of care and compassion for the least among them.
Questions To Consider/Discuss:
In what ways are you showing compassion to the least among us?
