Week 6 Repairing the Hole in the World

Day #36 Mon Feb 8

Read Philippians 4:8-13

Paul was content in any and all circumstances. Can you say that? Or are you getting tired of the images of the poor? Did you watch the big game yesterday? Were you ready to escape into your warm house to that soft couch or the couch at friends, eat $3 bags of chips and the other mountain of snacks at the party, drink your favorite soft drink out of the 30 different kinds available, and cheer on your favorite team? Well, you have those opportunities and those choices. The poor do not. Now that you have had your party, figure out which day this week you can eat three meals of just rice and water similar to the 200,000 packages bagged up this weekend.  Don’t whine. Be like Paul. You have been called by our Great God to do great things and to be content in any situation.  The world is waiting for your witness. You are part of God’s “Plan A” for the salvation of today’s world.

Week 4 Putting the American Dream to Death

Day #22 Monday Jan 25

Read Matt 6:28-34

Interview 2-5 Christians at Blue Grass Church. Ask them how they consider pursuing the American Dream to be the same or different from discipleship to Jesus Christ and seeking first the Kingdom of God. Where do they see tension in these two paths?  Rich Stearn’s story in the Hole in Our Gospel speaks of much struggle in his life between his American Dream and discipleship. What is your story of discipleship? Write it down and share it with someone.

What’s Wrong with this Picture?

Day  #15  Mon Jan 18th

Read 2 Corinthians 8:1-9

Think about your trials in life. Are you able to focus on someone else during your trials? Even in their trials and poverty the Macedonians in 2 Corinthians 8 showed rich generosity toward the poor in Judea (those called saints in 8:4; for more explanation see also Acts 11:28-30). When you move your focus to someone who has a life situation worse than yours, what does it do for your attitude? When you think about the plight of one starving child in any of the developing countries or for the people in Haiti suffering from this devastating earthquake right now, what does that do for your trials? A determined football running back can carry the burden of an opposing tackle for several feet on his way to the goal line before he is brought down. Can you move that FMSC football a few feet closer to the financial goal this week even in your trial? If you haven’t already done so, sign up to pack or serve in some capacity on the packing weekend Feb 5-7? If you haven’t already done so, donate your financial gift to the FMSC cooler.

Finding the Hole in Me.

Day #8 Mon, Jan 11

Read Matt 25:31-46

In Matt 25 the goats were separated out for eternal punishment because they did not notice those in need. Consider this scenario… you’re dashing out the door for work or a meeting. You don’t want to be late. Horror of horrors! In your driveway is a hungry, destitute child…weeping. What do you do? Drive around him? Tell him to move on? Richard Stearnes, the author of our book, Hole in Our Gospel, agonizes over how we don’t notice the needs in the world. He compares the 26,500 children dying of poverty each day to 100 jetliners crashing every day. We would notice the jetliners crashing, but what needs to happen to get our attention about poverty? What will cause us to stop and take notice?
